Chapter 7 of The Kidney Sellers

1/29/2014

The seventh chapter of Dr. Sigrid Fry-Revere's forthcoming new book The Kidney Sellers is entitled "The Rich and the Holy".  This chapter of the book is also subdivided into many subchapters.  This chapter details the author's experiences in the holy city of Mashhad, Iran.

Themes of this chapter include Iranian sexism, Turkish and Moroccan sexism, the use of brain-dead cadaver kidney donors, wise advice from magician Penn Jillette, the variable motivations of Iranian living kidney donors, death protocols in the "first world" as compared to the "third world", the lonely life of Iranian intellectuals, and the Persian soul.

The final paragraph of this chapter, however, was very distressing to the LIBERTARIAN BIOETHICS BLOGger.  In this section the author admits she believes "caring for the less fortunate" is a personal AND a governmental responsibility.  Say it ain't so, Sigrid, say it ain't so!!!  Such a statement (in conjunction with several other opinions delivered previously in the book) certainly makes me doubt the "libertarian" bona fides of Dr. Fry-Revere. I trust the remainder of the work will clarify her political persuasion.

Chapter 6 of The Kidney Sellers

1/22/2014

The sixth chapter of Dr. Sigrid Fry-Revere's forthcoming new book The Kidney Sellers is entitled "The Poor and the "Lucky'".  This portion of the work is a chronicle of the author's experiences in Isfahan, Iran.  Like the previous two chapters, this chapter is divided into multiple short subsections.

The highlights of this chapter are as follows: an interesting Iranian Muslim parable about justice, the beauty of "the pearl of Persia", a comparison of Iran and Greece, an odd conversation, a visit to Al-Zahra Hospital, a disappointing Iranian National Kidney Foundation Anjoman, nanny tales, the amazing Abulfazi Anjoman, and a ridiculous Islamic cultural taboo.  I can report no lowlights in this chapter.  The libertarian theme of the chapter was the variable mixture of selfish and altruistic motivations (consistent with Austrian subjective value theory) given by Iranian compensated kidney donors when explaining why they ultimately chose to proceed with kidney donation.

Dr. Fry-Revere's writing continues to impress.

Chapter 5 of The Kidney Sellers

1/15/2014

The fifth chapter of Dr. Sigrid Fry-Revere's forthcoming new book The Kidney Sellers is a lengthy account of her time in Tehran interacting with Iranians on a professional and personal level.  This chapter is also divided into multiple sections, too numerous to mention.  Spoiler alert: Tehran is no Shiraz.

Highlights of this chapter include the following: an unofficial currency exchange, time in a filthy Tehran hotel, an Iranian family's dinner political discussion, memories of a difficult night in Marseille, generalized social tension in Tehran, a run-in with security at Shariati Hospital, Dr. Bastani's intriguing backstory, generalized social fear of American attack in Tehran, the stories of unhappy compensated kidney "donors" in Tehran, the social stigma of selling a kidney in Iran, the stories of happy compensated kidney "donors", the complexity of Iranian kidney sales to foreigners, Sharia law support for compensated kidney "donation", and the decadence of the Grand Ayatollah's granddaughter.  Lowlights of this chapter include the author apparently without irony musing about American "due process" and "checks and balances that control power in the West" and the author's American-centric judgment of "Iran's not-so-secret support of Hezbollah and Hamas and its pursuit of nuclear power in violation of repeated United Nations Security Council admonitions" as a "provocation".

The travelogue style of this work continues to impress.

Chapter 4 of The Kidney Sellers

1/8/2014

The fourth chapter of Dr. Sigrid Fry-Revere's forthcoming new book The Kidney Sellers is entitled "Law, Hypocrisy, and the Black Market".  It is divided into 15 subsections.  This section of the work describes, in detail, the author's personal and medical experiences in Shiraz, Iran.

Memorable moments from this chapter include a description of standard Iranian toilets, Iranian patriarchal attitudes expressed by an Iranian female physician, the impressive hospitality of the author's hosts, a perilous "playing tourist" scenario, the dangers of the hijab, the recognition of the power of a cultural guide in a foreign culture, a visit to an Iranian ghetto, the recognition of the power of a "people person" in any culture, the power of love in any culture, and the utility of video games to teach children foreign languages.

Bioethical insights from the chapter include the following: the relative lack of informed consent in Iran due to cultural and economic pressures, compensated-kidney donation is heavily regulated by the Iranian State, compensated-kidney donation (from recipient to seller) is banned in Shiraz Iran due to ethical and other concerns, compensated-kidney donation (from recipient to seller) proceeds on a "don't ask don't tell" basis regardless of the ban, and the practice of non-monetary compensation for cadaver kidney donation is common in Shiraz.

The LIBERTARIAN BIOETHICS BLOGGER was especially intrigued by the description of the "don't ask don't tell" illegal compensated-kidney donation system in Shiraz, for this fact illustrates that people from any society react to economic reality regardless of the State's criminal attempts to crush said human adaptation (i.e. gray and black markets are universal human phenomenon).

Incidentally, I imagine I would personally struggle in the Iran depicted by the author, for I have very specific dietary habits (due to severe Crohn's disease) that I doubt could be met.
