All serious bioethical theories must grapple with the four fundamental principles of bioethics proposed by Tom Beauchamp and James Childress (TB/JC) in 1979 in Principles of Biomedical Ethics. These principles are as follows: respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice.
Theoretically, libertarian bioethics neither endorses nor disavows the four TB/JC basic bioethical principles. Pragmatically, libertarian bioethics endorses the four TB/JC principles when they are not in conflict with the fundamental libertarian rational natural-rights ethic (self-ownership and original appropriation and non-aggression) and disavows the four TB/JC principles when they are in conflict with the fundamental rational natural-rights ethic (self-ownership and original appropriation and non-aggression).
